Manufacturer - Heddon
Full Lure Name - Heddon Saltwater Zara Super Spook
Rating (1 to 10, 10 being best) - 9
Type - Top Water
Depth – Top Water
Colors and patterns – Assorted, some good for overcast days and others for clear days.
Fishing for – This lure is good in the summer when the fish are active. Will work on warm winter days also. Morning and evening will produce best results, but if the fish are hungry they will hit all day long. Just about anything will hit this from sharks, Tarpon, Redfish, Snook and Trout. I have even caught Catfish and Pinfish with it.
Setup – Use a loop knot tied to the lure using Mono or Fluorocarbon leader. Leader length should be at least 18 inches. You may need to adjust the length if using Fluorocarbon since it tends to sink and pull the nose of the plug down. Take small amounts off of it until the lure works properly. 20 to 30 lbs leader is fine in most cases, but 40 lbs works well also. Do not use swivels; tie directly to line.
Where to use these lures – Use this lure in open areas like flats and channels. Casting along structure like mangroves can produce some great hits, but use caution - This lure snags easily almost like it has a magnet to anything it can hang up on. Do not use it if there is any amount of grass floating on the water. The smallest piece of grass on this lure will turn a fish away.
Technique – This is a walk the dog type of lure. Make long casts, and when retrieving the lure give twitch movements making the lure move from side to side. Work the lure in a clockwise pattern to cover a lot of area in a small amount of time. This is a great lure for finding where the fish are located.
Angler ability – This is not a beginner lure. It takes time to master using this lure. Practice, and when you think you’ve got it, practice some more because you don’t! Accuracy is important if using this lure anywhere near structure.
Additions – When purchasing these lures, get the saltwater version. You also may want to change the hooks and rings on it, but use hooks and rings of the same weight and size or you risk the lure not performing as it was designed.
Notes from Randy - I’ve spent countless hours throwing this lure, and I can say this lure is easily my all-time favorite. There's nothing like the rush of watching the wake created by a large Tarpon stalking your lure just before its smashing strike. Or can anything equal the exhilaration seeing a Snook burst out of the water, the plug dancing on its lips as it tries to engulf your lure? Then again, there’s always the excitement of a large Redfish popping the lure over and over again as it tries to get a bite on. The moment you catch your first fish on a top water plug, you’ll see why so many anglers love them—it’s pure adrenaline!
